5 out of 5 stars Excellent portrait guide   August 22, 2010
Peter Polko (Palatine, IL, US)
Although labeled a "Wedding Photo Guide", this is much, much more. It is the first really definitive guide for portrature seen in years!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for weddings -- it's a must-own book!   August 12, 2010
Learning All The Time (USA)
Okay, yes this book is largely about weddings, but the principles behind everything Ziser discusses can be used for almost any type of location portrait photography. I refer to this book ALL the time (I'm a portrait photographer who also second shoots weddings). Ziser's section on composition is FANTASTIC -- not just the rule of thirds, but also crash point symmetry and centered symmetry. I don't always compose my photographs according to the rule of 3rds, and they seemed to work, but it is useful to know the artistic principles behind WHY they work. His sections on lighting are also fantastic -- he shows you step by step what works and how to set up different shots. He talks about posing, working with groups, how to light a face properly, what's in his gear bag, and so on.

His style is definitely more classic than modern, and you won't see funky photoshop effects or sloppy borders on his work. But he consistently lights and poses his subjects beautifully and he generously shares so much of his knowledge about how to do that.

The only downside to purchasing this book is that you will expand your wish list!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good   August 2, 2010
David from Ytown (Youngstown, OH)
Upon initial browsing through this book, the overall feel is that it is filled with useful tricks and best practices. I am really impressed with the lighting techniques, equipment recommendations, and picture references. Seems like a great book for beginners, as well as a good reference for continued education of advanced photographers.

Review update: almost done reading the book, and it was better than anticipated. Not just a great tool for wedding photographers, but also for those who want to improve lighting, posing, portraiture, etc... Highly recommended, and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Wedding Book   July 24, 2010
CC
I have bought many books on wedding photography over the years and this is by far the best. I like the layout, lots of pictures with easy to understand explanations of why and how he took the shot. He also covers a large variety of topics with up to date information on current products i.e the latest Canon cameras and lenses. Very informative, easy book to read. I have read it several times and constantly refer to it for answers to questions or to see how he handled a situation.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!   July 10, 2010
Marlow (USA)
This is one of the ones to have. Some of it I know, but the way the books was done made it interesting and engaging to read. I seriously learned something when I saw how the author applied composition in different ways.

This is an outstanding book, and I highly suggest buying it.
